Healthy Lifestyle – Enriching Life with Music

Pretty young woman listening to music, instruments conceptHey Earth’s Enrichers

This is the time of the year when it feels like the walls are caving in! There are year-end deadlines holiday parties and holiday shopping drawing near—Phew! How do you relax these days? How do you casually blow off some steam?

Would you believe me if I told you that music can be a wonderful cure-all (figuratively speaking, of course). Music can create a stimulating environment and can be the perfect sound track to helping you get through life. If we were you, we’d take every opportunity to listen to our favorite songs and jam like there’s no tomorrow.

Music is like a key to your soul. When you need motivation, music can help you get things done. When you clean for the holidays, listen to some music and enjoy yourself. Watch, the house will be sparkling before you even know it. You could even listen to music while you work out, it gets you in the zone.

Music is a great relaxant in two ways: One, you can listen to cool and calm music to soothe the inner beast that you wanted to unleash on your coworker today; or two, you can listen to music that gets you up and moving! Air guitar and dance your rage, anger, or stress away all throughout your place of solace. Not only will it calm you down, but it will release endorphins and you’ll get a work out. So let loose!

Say for example, perhaps your mind is just too exhausted for sleep, and you need to find some way to unwind before bed.  Run yourself a nice hot bath with some lavender bath salts and play your favorite music. This would be a nice time for jazz or slow jams for the perfect evening of relaxation.

Or, say you wanted to keep your mind alive at work! We have all been there—the work day can be dreadfully slow. If your supervisor allows it, play some appropriate music and keep your mind stimulated. It’s better than going for an energy drink or another cup of coffee. Just be careful not to distract yourself from getting stuff done. Think of music as a mental message that can improve cognitive processes.

In other words, don’t let the world get to you. There are ways to safely escape your troubles without causing others and yourself harm. Music gives you the option to sink into relaxing meditation or focused motivations. It keeps you refreshed. Next time you’re stuck in traffic, don’t fret turn on the jams. Sing your heart out and you’ll find life easier. Tootles ^^

Health and Living – Environmental Health

 ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Hey Earth’s Enrichers

Ladies and Gentlemen, the six principles of heath are coming to an end. However, this does not mean that you have to forget all that we have shared with you. So here is a quick review of the five principles we have introduced.  The first principle we covered was physical health, which represents the body’s health and refers to anything that benefits your body’s physical fitness, safety, nutrition, and medical responsibility.

The second principle was intellectual health, which represents the mind and keeping it well feed and active. The third was spiritual health, which means having a purpose or deeper meaning in life. The fourth was emotional health, which is the ability to cope with stress and achieve/maintain self-esteem. The fifth was social health, which is the making and conservation of meaningful interpersonal relationships.  Our grand finale, the sixth principle of health, is environmental health.

When you think of the environment, what comes to mind? Pollution? The place in which you live? Let’s put it like this: environmental health is the effect the environment has on you and the effect you have on the environment. That’s right. In this health principle you have a direct responsibility to the planet. Believe it or not, what you do for the environment can directly affect the environment of those around you.

This affect you have on the environment can be a positive one or a negative one. Remember, you do have a choice. For instance, if you have something you’re finished with and it leaves behind trash find the proper way to dispose of it. It may not seem like much but your contribution could lead others to make better decisions as well.

Now, here is where you have to be careful of the environment as a whole. When living in certain places there are certain things about those places that you know aren’t safe. For instance, in some places it is not so healthy to drink the water directly from the faucet. On another note, it may not be healthy to go down that dark deserted alley on your way home.

This vital part of environmental health is knowing your environment. Do research to find out what you can and cannot do. Also, look into where you can find a farmers’ market and organic and healthy products. That way you are not falling into unhealthy eating habits. Find out the safer and open areas to exercise and increase fitness.

This principle of heath requires that you look after your own health and consider other’s health around you. It’s a way to personally have a positive impact on your neighbors and the environment itself. Looking after the environment will help look after you in the long run- you deserve it and your peers deserve it as well!

The EE 411: Looking After Your Environment

  • Recycle
  • Put your trash away the right way (making sure it is all in the garbage can)
  • Clean the gutters
  • Plant Plants
  • Dispose of electronics properly – Did you know that electronics like headphones are supposed to be disposed of in a particular way? They can also be recycled.
  • Conserve energy- unplug the things you are not using.
  • Ride your bike to places you need to go (conserve energy, reduce pollution, and perfect physical activity).
  • Check leaky faucets.

These are simple things you can do yourself that can positively affect your environment. Using organic products can help reduce the amount of chemicals you use. Chemical waste is a big part of the environment. Buying products that are produced with chemical and artificial preservatives is not the best things for you. Look after yourself. Your body is your fortress- so protect it!

Health and Living – Social Health

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Hey Earth’s Enrichers

It doesn’t seem like summer is ready to come to its end yet. So do not stop having fun yet. There is plenty of time to meet new people and establish new relationships. Let us elaborate on what we mean by relationships. We mean friendships, meeting new people, or maybe even possibly meeting someone you want to get to know on a deeper level. Not like that! Instead, we mean taking the time to initiate meaningful relationships. This can be done in old relationships with friends, family, or spouse. This can also help you determine how to make meaningful relationships with new people.

The topic this week is social health, ladies and gentlemen. Social health is the making and conservation of meaningful interpersonal relationships. It is a way of networking through your social life where you analyze what relationships are beneficial and not destructive. It helps you build confidence about your interactions and gives you a better support system. This, of course, means you have to be there for your friends too. It is only right to return the favor if they support you.   An even balance of work, family, friends, and self can bring you happiness.   Just do not overwhelm yourself, so know your limits.

When it comes to relationships, we’d like to talk to you about quality over quantity. The number of friends or stable relationships you have does not matter. It is the quality of those relationships that matters. An individual can literally only have two friends and have a better quality relationship with them than an individual who may have ten friends. Now, you can have ten friends and have a  great quality relationship with them. The main point is to not focus on the numbers. Instead, focus on the relationship.

We have a key to helping you create better quality relationships and it’s not even a secret. The key is communication. It seems simple, right? Believe it or not, communication is a skill that needs plenty of practice to maintain and hone. With practice comes better ways to communicate and share your ideas, experiences, and feelings without obstructing a relationship. The trick is not to think too much, while at the same time trusting yourself and your friends. Feel free to ask if they are okay with something or ask their point of view. Questions like these open channels to communicate more deeply and make more connections.

Practicing communication will help you move one step closer to creating a stable social network and maintaining better quality relationships. Having a more stable social network made of family, spouse, and friends helps you build a better support system, which gives you more confidence in everyday interactions. With the mastering of communication skills, you can become a professional at making friends and having a great social life. You deserve it!

The EE 411: Social Health

With the creation of new technology and more efficient ways of getting in touch comes greater responsibility. There is nothing wrong with having relationships (friendships, etc.) with individuals online (as long as you know who they are) but do not let those online relationships take away from in person, face-to-face relationships. Remember, balance is the key to happiness.

Ways to help or open communication in relationships:

  • Play twenty-one questions where you can ask them 21 questions about themselves and make your own rules. Make it fun!
  • If you know that your friends like to have spa days or massages, how about you all find a time when you are free and meet up. Or you could have your own Spa parties at each other’s places and interchange. (We recommend Calming Spa Seaweed body bar, sea salt, sugar, and body balm for the theme.)
  • Find something that all of your friends like to do whether it’s shopping, going out dancing or for dinner, playing your favorite sports game, even getting together and watching your favorite sports game.
  • If you are too busy for friends, make time! Having a break every now and again can help you think clearly. It also benefits your relationships.
  • Having a game night or dinner party is a great way to get friends and family together.

Health and Living – Spirituality

 ???????????????????????Hey Earth’s Enrichers

When you think of spirituality, what exactly comes to mind? Spirituality is very important for human health. Spirituality is the foundation of fundamentals that create the basis of human purpose. This means spirituality gives an individual a feeling of purpose, a sense of meaning in their lives.

With religion, spirituality is defined in many different ways. In health, it has more of a universal definition. Spiritual health simply wishes you to answer this question: do you feel you have a purpose or greater meaning in life? Spiritual health is less linked to a deity and more linked to the idea of building your confidence and improving your inner (mental) health. In other words, do you feel you are connected to this world for a reason?

Look at your life, accomplishments, and future goals. Discover your next move in life and how you can better reach your goals.

Take long walks and get in touch with yourself, reflect on what has happened in your life both good and bad. When was the last time you took time out of your busy day and cherished your good ol’ memories? To live in the past isn’t healthy, but to reminisce every now and again is perfectly fine.

This principle also focuses on establishing personal values. These personal values should help you with your emotional health, physical, and social life. These values can range from philosophical—do unto others, as you would have them do unto you—to physical like practicing fitness to counteract daily stress that could affect your social life.

Spiritual health encourages you to think out of the box by thinking inside of the box. Its purpose is to inspire you to look inside yourself and discover who you are, what makes you a better person and what makes you happy.

It encourages you to challenge yourself and the only way to do that is to know who you are (to know your limits). It stimulates you to enjoy yourself and love yourself. So, take the time out of your day to enjoy life and enjoy being alive. This is something you definitely deserve!

The EE 411: A Better Way To Get In Touch

One major aspect of spiritual health is the ability to get in touch with yourself, to basically understand your ultimate purpose in life. This simply means being able to experience love, pain, peace, joy, grief, and responsibility and admiration for all living beings.

Of course you have felt all of these and they are everyday aspects of life. They cannot be avoided because these feelings are a part of life. However, optimal spiritual health helps you navigate these emotions.

Meditation is a great way to achieve spiritual health.  Just in case you don’t know what meditation is, it is basically a time where you are quiet and you can deeply reflect.  The classic way to meditate is to find a quiet place to isolate yourself with the option of calming music to guide you.  This way you are undisturbed and are free to roam your thoughts as you please. Meditation does not have to be limited to sitting in isolation and it works best when you relax.  It can be done in any environment and doing any activity.  A leisurely stroll through a park or simply walking your dog could be a great time to reflect and admire the planet you live on.

We say a great way to relax and think about your day and reflect is in an awesome, warm, soothing bath. This allows you to slowly drift into long musing without disturbance. We recommend Lavender of the Valley to help you relax. Perhaps, a little soak in our bath salts to create a soothing aromatherapy, which is great for relaxing. Treat yourself and help balance your spiritual health.

Living Healthy – Staying Cool

Young Woman Looking At Sun Drawn On Her Back With Suntan Lotion

Hey Earth’s Enrichers

The summer temperatures are ripe this year! They range from 80 to anywhere in the 90s and above. In this kind of weather, you must bring your A-game of coolness. So we ask you, how are you staying cool in the toaster summer of 2014?

We at EE are natural at staying cool. So this week we are going to let you in on the scoop; that way you’re not burning up out there. It is very important that you keep several things in mind during the summer time heat: (1) the clothes you wear, (2) keeping yourself hydrated, (3) the shoes you wear, (4) your skin’s protection, and (5) keeping an eye on your body’s signals.

In order to prepare for those five things, it is a good idea to know the temperature and the temperature changes throughout the day. Typically, the hottest time of the day is anywhere between 3pm and 6pm. These are the times that you should be most prepared for.

So, when you dress in the morning and you have learned that it will be a very hot day, stray away from wearing black—even if it’s your color! We all know how we look good in black, but we guarantee you it will not feel good in 90 degree weather. It is recommended to wear light colors, because sun rays are drawn to darker ones making it feel way hotter than it is.

Invest in a water bottle, one that you won’t dispose of easily. This way you’re one step closer to sparing the environment and keeping yourself properly hydrated. Try not to leave the house without your icy water-filled bottle. These water bottles can usually hold a minimum of 16 oz. Keeping your body hydrated keeps you from tiring, getting headaches, and possibly getting nauseous while going about your daily activities in the scorching sun.

The right shoes are very necessary. If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking in the hot sun, believe it or not, black sandals aren’t the best either. They get terribly warm when you’re walking.  This could cause “some” discomfort. So, when you’re putting that outfit together and you plan on being outside indirect sunlight, try building the outfit with a lighter pair of shoes.

One of the most important parts of this list is protecting your skin properly from the sunlight. It is important to use sunscreen when going out in hot weather (where the sun and its rays thrive). You could also find moisturizers that have sun protection. There is nothing worse than being sun burnt or having sun poisoning. This is important even if you’re not at the beach because it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Last but not least, pay close attention to your body and know your body’s distress signals. If you feel faint, find some shade and take a little break. Sip some of that water that you prepared in that reusable water bottle, and take your time getting back in the mix. If symptoms like exhaustion, headaches, nausea, and irritated skin persist, seek professional medical attention.

The EE 411:

Here are some other cool tips:

  1. If you exercise, shift your schedule to when it is cooler. Try going out early in the morning or later in the evening. That way, you don’t subject yourself to harsh heat.
  2. Invest in a spray bottle. There are some really cool ones with fans attached to them. J
  3. Wear cotton or synthetic breezy clothing.
  4. Bathe frequently and keep up with your skin (cleansing, moisturizing, exfoliating, etc.)
  5. Avoid caffeine and/or alcohol; it dehydrates you.
  6. Go where the air conditioning is! If you don’t have any at home, travel to the library or mall.
  7. Heat rises! If it is too hot upstairs, then spend some time downstairs or on the floor. When in doubt watch your house pet; they will find the coolest spot in the house.

Organic v. All-Natural Skin Care

Dear Earth’s Enrichers

Organic v. All-Naural Skin Care
Organic v. All-Naural Skin Care

As you begin or continue your quest to a healthier living, you will or have already come across the products with the labels “all-natural” and “organic.” These labels, although they are both products that are meant for healthy living, are very different. It is important to know the differences between them. This is for many reasons:

  • Lifestyle
  • Beliefs
  • Necessity  or need

Also, for those of you that are new to the world of natural and organic skin care, the information can help you decide whether you’re team all-natural or team organic—there will be some of you who cheer for both teams.

Skin care products that are “all-natural” use ingredients that comes from natural resources. Basically, any resource that comes from nature, itself. They are minimally processed and do not contain any synthetic chemicals, yet some natural ingredients can be synthesized.

An example of this would be putting additional vitamins into a product that does naturally contain those vitamins.  Let’s say for example vitamin E is synthetically created, and placed within a product. This product will have the benefits of vitamin E, but not the actual thing.

However, ingredients that are “organic” do not use natural synthetic replacements for natural products. They use the real natural deal derived from living organisms, water, and sea salt are not considered organic material because although it comes from natured it was not derived from a living organism. They also cannot be genetically modified (GMO’s) do not contain any chemical preservatives. This would include artificial flavors, etc.

There are carrying levels of organic products made with organic ingredients.  A USDA certified product must contain at least 95% organic content; the company must also have its facilities, ingredients manufacturing procedures and packaging certified to make sure the process matches with the USDA requirements. A product can still be considered organic or contain organic materials, but basically without that USDA certification seal you are taking the company’s word for it. So, pay close attention to the labels and ingredients because it makes a difference.

A less restrictive level of “Organic Products” are those containing at least 70% organic content.  These products can be described as being “made with organic ingredients” may and can contain synthetic chemicals, preservatives, or GMO. So, be careful and read what you use. You’ll be surprised at what you find sometimes.

As for lifestyle, beliefs, and necessity or need, these reasons contribute to helping you decide which team you’re on. If you don’t believe in the creation or use of genetically modified organism (like plants and/or food), then you may want to go the route of organic. If your skin does not “agree” with chemicals or synthetic ingredients and you don’t want to risk it with “all-natural,” you may want to go organic as well.

Lifestyle plays a big role in what you chose because this not only incorporates your needs/necessities but incorporates your accessibility or the amount of funds you are willing to extend towards all-natural and or organic skin care.

In some cases, you may find that organic skin care may be more expensive than all-natural skin care at the moment. Or that all-natural or organic skin care may still be too much. This is okay and understandable.

As we mentioned last week, companies are starting to realize that all-natural and organic skin care is what it needed. The rise of all-natural and organic skin care products has made accessibility to both worlds much easier. Now-a-days it’s becoming easier to not have to choose between the two. You can have both all-natural and organic, while looking out for the benefits you need for your skin.

The EE 411:

Organic Ingredients:

  • Defined as coming from living biological matter like plants.
  • Government regulated and certified
  • Contains no artificial or chemical anything
  • No GMO
  • No synthetic natural replacements like synthetic vitamins
  • Can be USDA certified

All- Natural Ingredients:

  • Not regulated in skin care
  • Cannot be USDA certified
  • Can be altered and contain preservatives
  • Can also contain perfumes and some chemical ingredients
  • May be more affordable and offer more product options

There are other healthy living skin care categories out there, did you know? Although, they are sometimes incorporated into organic and all-natural skin care they are not always recognized as their own categories. Mostly because the products can’t always satisfy all the requirements of each group. Other skin care categories are Vegan and Cruelty-free.

Some products may be all-natural and/or organic but still test their products on animals which violates the cruelty-free rules. Cruelty-free means not testing their products on animals, or causing harm to animals in the development of the product.

Then, in the cases of vegan, some all-natural and organic skin care products use ingredients that come from animals and other living creatures. This means that the product may be totally organic, drawing from natural resources that come from living creatures. This violates the rules of being a vegan product. Vegan products contain no ingredients that come from living creatures.

EE’s products are an example of the new found access to all-natural, organic, non-gmo, cruelty-free, gluten-free (except Honey Granola), and vegan (except Honey Granola). Try some body bars that can give the experience of all these traits and see how it makes your skin feel.

Healthy Snacks – Holiday Delights

Happy Holidays Earth’s Enrichers!

Healthy Snacks- Holiday DelightsThe next step to the holiday season is deciding what to put on the table. There are some traditional Christmas/Holiday goodies that actually have some beneficial ingredients that could add to healthy living. Remember the lyrics to “A Christmas Song” about chestnuts roasting on an open fire—believe it or not, they have some nice health benefits. So do sweet potatoes, popcorn, plums, cranberry sauce, candy canes, gingerbread, coffee, and even chocolate.

Chestnuts have substantial health benefits.  They are low in fat and calories. They are a nice source of fiber, vitamin B-6 and C. Another great benefit is that chestnuts, when ground up, can be used as a gluten-free flour for baked goods. So feel free to enjoy chestnuts draped over eggnog ice cream, cake, and even a salad.

Sweet potatoes also contain Vitamin B-6, and C. Vitamin C helps produce collagen, which aids the skin in looking younger, and helps with healing.  In addition, sweet potatoes have iron, magnesium, and fiber. Magnesium helps with relaxation and helps reduce stress.

Popcorn is basically whole grain that contains natural fibers and antioxidants but in order to get to these benefits, make the popcorn in olive oil. Processed popcorn contains butter and salt that overshadow the healthy benefits.

Remember the sugar plums that are supposed to dance over your head… well feel free to enjoy! Although some sugar plums can be pure sugar and candy, some can be made with the actual fruit—plums, prunes, figs, etc. If made with the fruits and a moderation of sugar, you can still benefit from the healthy properties of plums. Plums contain vitamin C, K, and A, thiamine, riboflavin, iron, calcium, potassium, and fiber. Vitamin C can help form, and repair skin.

Cranberry Sauce can also have some beneficial health. Check out cranberry sauces that are made with all-natural or organic ingredients. That way the health properties—fiber, Vitamin C, and E—could be enjoyed without artificial preservatives. Also, the tart in cranberries can help with inflammation.

Candy canes have great health benefits as well! Yes, pretty awesome! There is one catch to this the candy canes must contain peppermint oil, not artificial flavoring. The peppermint oil produces antioxidants that help break down food. It helps soothe indigestion and abdominal pain. It can decrease the chances of heartburn and bloating. It also, of course, helps get rid of bad breath, in part by helping to eliminate bacteria.

Gingerbread is another holiday tradition that you don’t have to feel guilty about. The main ingredients of gingerbreads or men are ginger and molasses. Molasses is a natural sweetener and ginger is an anti-inflammatory. It also helps with stomach discomfort. Don’t eat too many sweets though; you don’t want to over do it. Coffee and dark chocolate when consumed responsibly can help reduce cellulite and tone and protect skin respectively.

There are many other healthy aspects to the wonderful things you eat for the holidays. These are just some well-known favorites. We encourage you to inquire about your favorite holiday treats and see what health benefits they might have.

The EE 411:

Green Tea, although not a holiday tradition, can be a healthy addition to your menu. It helps give your skin the nutrition it needs to protect your skin from too much exposure of harmful sun rays  and is an energizing equivalent for those who are sensitive to caffeine and don’t want a lot of it. It is also a healthy choice for drinking, giving you more healthy options to reduce the risks of diabetes.

Instead of using sugar, try the switch to honey. Honey helps regulate blood sugar. Honey is a natural sweetener that is equivalent to sugar. So to sweeten your teas, coffee, or even desserts, give it a try and see if you like it.

Last but certainly not least, ham can be another healthy addition to your holiday menu. Incorporating lean ham with low amounts of sodium helps maintain a healthy watch over your course selections. Ham contains protein and zinc (which can help boost immunity and wound healing). Add to this some healthy greens like mustard greens, kale, or green beans. A combination of mustard and kale can help lower cholesterol, and aid in eye health.  Green beans contain vitamins K, C, and A. They also have potassium, which can help maintain control over your blood pressure and help cell production.

Natural Skin Care – Make up Tips

Hey Earth’s Enrichers!

Natural Skin Care - Make Up TipsMakeup is the now-a-days daily necessity. Everyone tends to wear it and there is nothing wrong with that. Makeup is used to accent one’s beauty, although, it does make one beautiful. It helps make qualifying features stand out and the not so favorite features seem invisible. Makeup is a part of the modern way to present oneself, whether it is onset for television, a business meeting, a night on the town, or sharing a great dinner with loved ones on Thanksgiving.

Even though there is nothing wrong with using make up, there are some aspects of using it to keep in mind.  It is very important to take care of your skin when using makeup. This means washing your face before you put on the makeup and washing it before you go to bed. The reason why you wash your face before you put it on is so that you get rid of all the sleep, drool, or any dead skin you shed while sleeping—this would include whatever makeup left over from the day before. Going to sleep with makeup on is a no, no. Not only does it mess up your linens, but it can clog your pores and cause you to break out. Sweating while having on makeup can also cause clogged pores which leads to break outs.

To prevent break outs while using makeup, other than washing your face, don’t overdo it and layer your makeup.  It makes it harder to remove and locks up all the germs that your face encounters during the day. Of course, it takes some considerable effort to put makeup on, so when you sweat there are some ways to help you without wiping off your make up. Innovators have created dry wipes, which are basically tissue paper, to blot your face when sweating. It keeps from smudging makeup while lessening the amount of dirt that may get trapped in your pores.

Makeup can contain ingredients that can break you out as well. The most common of these ingredients are fragrances, and oils. Also, make sure you know your skin, and any particular ingredient you’re allergic to. Makeup can also cause acne. So, look for makeup that contain less oil, is dedicated to being acne free, and has natural ingredients without added fragrances. Practice safe skin! That way you can avoid the chances of breaking out and still enhance your natural beauty.

The EE 411:

How do you know you’ve broken out or had an allergic reaction?

When your skin starts to feel warm, inflamed, and it begins to itch, swell, or burn, it may be time to see a dermatologist. If it persists, it could create blisters (from scratching or skin sensitivity).   It’d be best to tackle the problem before blisters occur.

What are some cosmetic contributions to skin irritations?

  • Irritant Contact Dermatitis- itching and burning caused by a makeup product
  • Allergic Contact Dermatitis- allergy to ingredients in makeup resulting in blisters, itching, and swelling.
  • Acne Cosmetica-  Acne caused by cosmetics

What to look for in cosmetics?

  • Makeup that doesn’t clog your pores
  • Nonallergenics
  • Makeup dedicated to not causing acne

Nail Care

 Nail CareHey Earth’s Enrichers

Remember the saying about the white spots on your nails? “Those little white spots on your nails would determine how many ‘significant others’ you would have”.  Well, some of you may have heard it.  Anyway, what are those white spots you may ask?  Those little spots are actually quite normal in some cases (not supernatural).  Some folks say it is a vitamin deficiency, but that isn’t always the case. They are usually the result of scrapping or accidentally damaging your nail somewhere in the past. So, how can you avoid them and maintain healthy nails?  Don’t worry, it’s really quite easy!

There are some rules and regulations for you to keep in mind in order to sustain the health of your nails.

To begin, let’s discuss what’s normal and what’s not normal for your nails.  As previously stated, those white spots or even lines on your nails aren’t anything to be concerned about and they will eventually grow out.  This also applies for the vertical ridges that may appear on your nail bed.  They are natural too and they usually become much more visible as a person ages.

Here is what’s not so healthy: unnatural curling or shaping of the nails, nail discoloration such as dark spots that may appear on the top or under the nail, and the thinning or thickening of the nail.  Symptoms of these ailments include irritation, bleeding, pain, or swelling.  If you ever experience any of these symptoms, you know that they can be very painful and that you should probably go see your doctor.

When it comes to your feet, remember that they can be affected by unhealthy nails as well! In fact, they are the more susceptible to infection because they come in contact with the dirtiest part of our world, the ground.  Also, being trapped in a shoe all day they can become hot and sweaty. This can breed infections.  Therefore, to help reduce the chances of any type of infections, change your socks and wash your feet every day.  Also, if you are working out, do not wear colored socks—they do not absorb sweat very well.  Finally, pay attention to itchiness and chronic foot odor.  These symptoms could also be signs of some sort of infection.  So, if you experience any of these signs and they persist and nothing that you do gets rid of them, then please go and see your doctor.

The EE 411: Steps to Maintaining Healthy Nails

  1. Trim and file your nails- It’s not just to make your hands and feet pretty, it keeps your nails from snagging and being bent back.  If this had happened to you in the past, you now that this is not a good feeling!
  2. Dry and clean your nails frequently- This keeps bacteria from growing under the nail.
  3. Moisturize you nails- There is skin under and around your nail. If it cracks, it can result in an uncomfortable hang nail.
  4. Keep your nails safe- Try not to hit them and distort them.
  5. Don’t bite! – Do not bite your nails or your cuticles.  This damages the nail bed and could lead to infection.
  6. Clip your hangnails- Do not pull them!  This could tear the nail bed or destruct ‘ouch!’
  7. Save your nails- If your nails show some of the symptoms listed above, go get them checked out before they gets worse.

Aromatherapy and Natural Perfumes

Aromatherapy and Natural PerfumesHey Earth’s Enrichers!

Get ready for the winter season, it will be quite cold and nippy this year. However, when the cold rolls in so do the Holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. This season brings around new aromas like pumpkin spice, and cinnamon  that contribute to the delicious scents of the season.

Although scents can be used as Feng Shui ( to create the perfect balance) and for aesthetic purposes, they are also used to help individuals’ moods.  As you may already know, this is called Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is often a preferred alternative method to medicine.  It is used to help change the state of a person’s mind.  In some cases, aromatherapy can help create a mood of relaxation after a long day of stress or it can help boost your mood when you may be feeling a little tired.

The aroma in aromatherapy is made up of essential oils from plants like roses, lavender, vanilla, or cinnamon.  Some oils have specific benefits that they provide.  For instance, if you’re in your office and you need some inspiration, get some peach spray or oil to help you perk up.  Or, if you are having problems with your sinuses, try some mint oil mixed with hot water and inhale the steam. You will be able to breathe again!

Aromatherapy can also be done with candles, not just oils.  When you finally get home from the cold, dim the lights, light some candles, and then take a nice warm bubble bath. The aroma from a lavender scented candle will help relax you.  Likewise, when your family comes over for the holiday, light a cinnamon  candle and watch them smile as they come through the door.

Here are some things that are important when looking for oils: First (1) look for oils that are not harsh on the skin.  You may want a long lasting fragrance that stays with you all day; however, you do not want oil that will break you out by the end of the day. Secondly (2), find the purest oils. They give you a great experience and they will help you obtain the functionality that you want (i.e. to relax, to perk up, etc.). Thirdly (3), make sure that you are careful around oils with your clothes.  You want oils that are skin and clothes safe.  Lastly (4), just for fun, look at the origins of the extracts that are in the oils. You should know if you are allergic to them and what they can actually do for you and your body.  Doing so may even help you figure out why you like them so much.

The EE 411:

There is a difference between perfume and the oils in aromatherapy.  Perfumes very rarely have any natural oil extracts.   Their ingredients usually contain synthetic and artificial scents with added chemicals such as Ethyl alcohol, phthalates, and Benzyl Benzoate.

Oils on the other hand, usually only contain extractions of the featured oil scent and perhaps additional essential oils that help complement that scent. They are mainly flavored by herbs and spices but they should contain nothing synthetic.  However, some oils are hard to come by.  So some venders may find the next best thing or they may dilute it a little.  If you read the ingredients of an oil and it has the same ingredients of a perfume, then it is essentially not an oil that should be used for aromatherapy.

Here are a few scents and their functions:

  • Lavender oils help boost your immune system, help you relax and sleep, and it has been known to help with depression.
  • Chamomile oils can help with digestion, it can be used as an anti-allergenic and anti-inflammatory, and it is also a wonderful relaxant.
  • Rosemary oils can help stimulate circulation, relieve pain, and help with decongestant.
  • Peppermint oils can help with sinuses, digestion, decongestant, and it can also be used as an antiseptic.
