Are you a juicer? There’s this wonderful way to take in all of the nutritious fruits and vegetables that you need. Juicing is a way for you to consume these nutrients in a delicious mix of your own. Whether you despise kale by itself but you love it with one your favorite fruits or you love is straight up, you can have your favorite or least favorite veggies and fruits anytime you want.  Of course, this isn’t a fairytale end to digesting your fruits and vegetables while still maintaining ALL of the appropriate nutrition. There are some rules. These rules ensure that you are getting all the nutrition you need.

Before I give you the juicing nutrition rules, let’s go over some juicing properties. The idea of juicing is basically taking your favorite fruits, vegetables, or both and designing your own delicious, affordable and all you can drink fest. This usually does not entail adding much else to your mixture, although if you see fit, you can add yogurt, ice, or any other suitable ingredient at your leisure.

You don’t need a professional grade juicer; you can simply use a blender. Before putting in any seedy fruits or anything with fibrous skin, we recommend peeling and deseeding. It will help you enjoy your drink and your blender in the long run.

Be kind to your blender! Your blender is the reason why juicing is possible so treat it with nice gestures like a thorough cleaning when you’re finished with it. That way it’s ready for the next fruit and vegetable rodeo.

Being kind to your blender has benefits for you—other than keeping it around longer. If you don’t like seedy or pulpy fruits/vegetables then choose options that lack those characteristics. Also, if you find that you don’t quite like thicker drinks add a little water till it’s just right.

This is all about what’s good for you! So keep in mind what makes you happy, while making and keeping you healthy. Continue to explore and research foods, beverages, and activities that keep up your fitness. If you haven’t given juicing a try, try it! Experiment with your favorite fruits, vegetables, milk, etc. Come up with your best, and tell us all about it. We’d love to hear it! The EE 411: Juicing Nutrition Rules

Now about those rules we promised you. These are important, so pay close attention. There are ten rules you should keep in mind when juicing:

  1. Juicing alone does not provide you with all of the nutrition necessary for your body. This means juicing diets are not recommended especially if you’re only consuming the liquid. It is important to have a well-rounded diet and; Juicing can lack the fibers/proteins necessary to keep your body healthy. The skins of the fruit/veggies and pulp are a part of those fibers/protein. It is important to actually eat the veggies and fruits that are the recommended amounts for a day.
  2. Depending on the vegetable or fruit you choose, you are taking in nourishing vitamins and benefits that are special to the particular veggie/fruit. So, it wouldn’t hurt to do a little research to see what you need and what fruits and/or vegetables can give it to you.
  3. When juicing it is important to know what your body needs and doesn’t need. It is counterproductive to overload your body with vitamins it doesn’t need. Your body will simply become confused and not know what to do with what you gave it. It could make you ill, so check with a professional and keep up with what your body is taking in.
  4. Juicing diets aren’t the best for detoxing. Once the fruit and veggies are juiced, fibers are demolished. Fiber helps your body produce waste and regulate the sugar levels in blood; without it in the juices, it doesn’t necessarily provide you all that you need. Therefore it’s not the best way to detox your body.
  5. Great for easy snacking and stopping you from eating that sinful junk food you like. It creates a fun and creative option that can satisfy the sweets cravings. Fruits have natural sugars, and you can definitely substitute that for your average sweets.
  6. Don’t go overboard. This is just a heads up. If you experiment with juicing and you juice, for example, a meal—please don’t make yourself sick. Don’t force yourself to drink it if you don’t like it.
  7. Calories vary depending on what you use. Grinding [insert your choice ingredient(s)] does not necessarily mean it breaks down the calories. This is another reason why knowing your body and research is important. What you like, may not meet the calorie goals you have in mind.
  8. Juicing can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancers. Using organic, natural grown vegetables and fruits can provide your body with benefits like strong bones, an increase in energy, antioxidants, boost the glow in your skin, and aid in weight loss.
  9. Drink it while it’s fresh! Once juiced, it can be quick to perish and lose its appealing taste.
  10. Make sure what you’re using is pesticide free, and natural or organic.

????????????????????????????????The idea of all-natural and organic is starting to set in and become an emerging norm. Some families, plant their own vegetables to place on the table at dinner. In addition to growing vegetables, they have the option to grow herbs and spices. In starting a personal garden, you could have an endless supply of what you need to cook and what you use to season your food. Not to mention, it saves money!

Now, before we go any further, it is important to realize that planting your own personal garden is a lot different from foraging. Foraging is for the experts! If you are used to going to the grocery store and buying your produce, then foraging is not for you. Foraging is the ability to identify different plants as edible/non-poisonous, collect them, and prepare them in a way that is safe for the body to process.

Unless you are well trained and have an extensive amount of experience, it is not a good idea to pick plants that you personally did not grow. You could end up with a serious case of poisoning. All of the vegetables that were deemed beneficial and good for a human being to eat have a doppelganger. Doppelganger, in the sense that there are very dangerous plants that look almost the same as the safe ones. There are slight differences in the plants that trained foragers or botanists are able to see. This protects them from making the wrong choice and they also know how to prepare certain edibles properly.

However, if you lack the foraging skills, planting a personal garden can help you have those fresh organic vegetables without possible detrimental outcomes. It could also help you save money on groceries and spices/herbs. Now, if you don’t have a green thumb, don’t worry. There are starter packets that can provide you with all the info and “how to do’s” of organic gardening.

Starting a vegetable garden maybe a fun hobby for the summer. It will take some care and patience but it has superb benefits that are financial, recreational, and healthy. This way you know you are making a healthy decision for your family.

• Look for fertilizers, plant food, and potting soils that have the right nutrients and lack harsh chemicals.
• Patience and water are key.

Having a garden to plant your own produce has benefits. For Example:
• Store-bought organic vegetables can be very hard on the wallet/pocketbook; gardens can reduce the cost of having this healthier option.
• Extra handling that comes from the transportation of the produce to its destination like to the market, or the warehouse is eliminated.
• Gardening gives you something to do with your family a memorable hobby you can all share and enjoy the end product together at the dining table.

Usually, the spring is known for its nice breezy days with moist rainy weather and the occasional thunderstorm. While, on the other hand, summer is known for its intense heat and days without rain. This means it kind of gets dry. Sometimes, like in the harsh winter, it can dry out your skin, especially your lips.

When the weather dries and the body starts to become thirsty or slightly dehydrated, the lips can start to become chapped and dry. It is important to stay hydrated and moisturize your skin, including having a lip balm and practicing healthy lip care.

We at EE narrowed down two main ingredients that we use in our lip balm that are sure to provide your lips with the nourishment they need. These ingredients are coconut oil and shea butter, which are well known for providing protection for your skin.

Coconut oil is a moisturizer that does more than hydrate your skin; it helps repair dry and damaged skin. Peeling, flaking, or rashes can be healed with regular usage. When lips are dry, they tend to peel and flake, which can cause pain or discomfort.

Coconut oil works great on other parts of your skin, so why not put it on your lips? It would leave them smooth and protect them from any sun damage as well—another grand benefit of coconut oil!

Shea butter and coconut oil are the perfect match when it comes to creating a fusion base for a lip balm. Shea butter is a natural moisturizer and it is great for soothing the skin, after the coconut oil regenerates and heals the skin, the shea butter maintains your lips silkiness and nourishes them. Also, just like coconut oil, shea butter can protect against aggressions like wind, cold, and sun making them a great team when it comes to lip care.

Please welcome Lemongrass Mint, Honey Vanilla, and Coconut Chai lip balms. These lip balms have the coconut oil and shea butter fusion base. However, there are some other awesome ingredients in these lip balms that are dedicated to healthy lip care.

In Lemongrass Mint, we added lemongrass and peppermint. Peppermint helps nourish your skin, while lemongrass helps ward off skin infections or fungus, which is great protection to have for your lips. Just think, how many times do your fingers, writing utensils, or other foreign things touch your lips?

Honey Vanilla is made with vanilla and honey. Not only does it produce a great aroma, but these ingredients are also great for your skin. Since the weather is becoming a little more consistent and the temperature is on the rise, it’s about that time for the tank tops and shorts! Now, we have to ask, what do you put on your skin to keep it nourished and moisturized? Are you a lotion person or a body balm person?  

What are Body Balms?

You do know the difference between lotions and body balms, right? Lotion, of course, moisturizes but it is not as thick or as creamy as a body balm. Lotions are made of oils and water. Body balms are much more dense and contain less water and more oil.

Why People use Body Balms?

One of body balm’s primary purposes is to moisturize skin effectively in a way that lotion cannot moisturize. The lotions you use may contain too much water and may not be giving your skin the level of moisturizing it needs.

Since body balms contain less water, they have enough of the proper oils to nourish the skin. When an individual applies lotion and it takes a good glob or handful of lotion to effectively nourish your skin, then a body balm may be what you need. It takes less than a big glob and can be used on the legs, face, arms, and feet.

Now, lotion is not all bad, but it is more convenient for you and healthier for your skin if you know how much moisturizer to apply. Lotion may not be enough to help you reach smooth, nourished, and moisturized skin. Also, it’s troublesome when you have too much of the lotion in your hands. Have you ever put too much lotion in your hands and looked for someone or something to wipe it on? Confess up!

Not to mention that wasting the lotion is kind of like losing money. Body balms usually come in a jar like ours. That way if you take too much you can just put it back in the jar and close the lid. Also, it is important to be careful when using dense oils to moisturize your skin, especially if you have naturally oily skin. Too much oil can cause break outs. So, use dense moisturizers responsibly.

What are the benefits of Body Balms?

If used appropriately, body balms can have many great effects on the skin. It’s a means of moisturizing your skin without suffocating it. They also give your skin a natural glow and make it more vibrant.

Body balms also come in many different fragrances. Each scent can come with its on benefits based on the ingredients that are used. For instance, here at EE we have three different scents: Lemon Fresh Shea, Calming Spa Seaweed, and Lavender of the Valley.

Before we go into the individual benefits, there are three main shared ingredients that we use in our balms. These ingredients produce the basic benefits of each balm. The three ingredients are sunflower oil, shea butter, and coconut oil. Sunflower oil helps the skin regenerate, reducing scars, improving aged skin, and has vitamins A, D, and E, while Coconut oil prevents the skin from flaking, helps with rashes, and protects against sun damage. Shea butter is a natural moisturizer that soothes the skin and helps protect it from elemental radicals like the wind and sun.

In EE’s Lemon Fresh Shea Body balm, we have other ingredients like lemongrass which wards off infections and fungus. In Calming Spa Seaweed, there are ingredients like seaweed and rosemary mint. Body balms are great for the skin, but they must be used wisely and appropriately. Pay attention to where your body prefers deeper moisturizers. If skin on parts of your body produce more oils than others, keep it duly noted. You do not want to over burden your skin with oils.

Also, if you find that some places are more likely to become dry, then it may be the primary spot you want to apply the body balm. If used excessively without proper hygiene, the oils in the body balm could clog the pores. That is why it is important to know how much is too much for your skin and maintain your body’s cleanliness. That way you and your body know and have a proper balance.

No worries, Earth’s Enrichers there are three new sugar scrubs to help revitalize, moisturize, cleanse, and bring back your skin’s natural glow. Not to mention, leaving you feeling refreshed and smelling great. Please welcome Calming Spa Seaweed, Lavender of the Valley, and Lemon Fresh Shea sugar scrubs. For those of you who haven’t really used sugar scrubs and have sensitive skin, this week’s blog is for you.

What are Sugar Scrubs and why use them?

Sugar scrubs are a sweet and sensational way to exfoliate. They are cleansers equipped with sugar crystal that are designed to gently exfoliate the skin. Exfoliating is the process before bathing or rinsing that gets rid of all the dead skin. This helps to make your bathing experience a lot more efficient. Dead skin only inhibits the soap from doing its job properly and stops it from deep cleansing. What are the benefits of Sugar Scrubs?

Sugar Scrubs not only remove dead skin, but also help draw out impurities or toxins in the skin. They can be used on all of the external skin of the body. It allow for a deeper clean that does not chemically put your skin in danger. They moisturize and buffer the skin, restoring its natural glow and smoothness.

How to use them?

Sugar scrub can be applied by rubbing into the skin with your hands, a wash cloth, or for a more effective result, with a hard bathing utensil like loofa or body scrub brush. There is no need to apply an extensive amount of pressure or scrub ferociously. Lightly pressing is sufficient to remove dead skin and clear the way for the soap.

You may use the sugar scrub in your bath or while you are in the shower usually scrubbing in a gentle, circular motion. After you have finished scrubbing, gently rinse the sugar off your skin with your hands or a scrubbing utensil. Then proceed with the rest of your bath.

Depending on your body as we always say knowing your body is the way to keep it healthy it can be used on any external surface and sensitive skin. If you detect any lasting redness, welting, or irritation of any kind, contact a professional. It could be allergies or you may have scrubbed too hard. It’s always important to find out from your doctor.

Before I continue on to the precautions of using sugar scrubs, we’d like to tell you what exactly is in our sugar scrubs. Since each sugar scrub has its own unique scent, we have boiled; It down to this: certified organic oils, powders, and sugars made from natural, organic elements. Each sugar scrub contains sunflower oil which is great for helping skin regenerate and reducing scars. It has the appropriate amount of Vitamin A, D, and E for your skin. Another ingredient is coconut oil that aids in relieving rashes and irritated skin. It also prevents drying and flaking of the skin.

Organic Health – GMO Behind the Scenes

Organic Health- GMO Behind the ScenesOne day you’re casually perusing around your usual market and you stumble across a product that says No-GMO. You think to yourself what is that? GMO? Does it have something to do with the military? Is it poisonous or toxic? Why No-GMO? To be able to answer these questions that this strange notation produces, you must first realize GMO is an acronym for genetically modified organism. How many of you knew that?

Genetically modified organisms are animals or plants that have been biotechnically altered for “better” appearance, taste, and/or longevity. This way, they combine aspects of different species and create something that cannot be created naturally. Whether GMO is natural or not is currently up for debate– it’s really quite a controversial topic in the industry.

GMOs are becoming increasingly popular due to the lack or over usage of some resources like plants. They were also deemed necessary to grow because of the need for successful crops.

Pests and the survival of crops have been problems for years, and GMO’s were a resolution to those problems—in other words, GMO products have been around, used, and eaten for years.  It seems that research now has shown some concerns with ingesting or using GMOs.

GMOs have been connected to increases in weight, kidney problems, and liver problems.  Also, in larger quantities of GMO foods, herbicides have been detected. Yet, all of this information is inconclusive since there hasn’t been any definitive research showing a direct connection between GMOs and these problems. Nor has the government actually ruled whether or not GMO’s are safe.

As far as effects on the skin, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has declared that there isn’t any evidence that GMOs negatively affect the skin. Some researchers have found inconclusive connections to Morgollens disease. As we say at EEknow your skin. Pay attention to the products you use and listen to your skin. If irritations begin to happen, notify your doctor or a specialist.

You should also learn your products. Research what may be GMO and what is not because many companies do not label it. Be aware that some products that say “all-natural” or even some products containing organic ingredients can also contain GMOs. 

The EE 411:

Some companies do not label whether their product have or do not have GMOs. Here are a few ingredients that can be genetically modified:

  • Canola
  • Corn
  • Corn oil
  • Corn flour
  • Soy bean
  • Lecithin
  • Proteins that can come from yeast
  • Flax
  • Rice
  • Cotton
  • Wheat
  • Vitamin C
  • Citric Acid
  • Corn Syrup
  • Flavorings that are natural or artificial

There are many more products that can be GMO. The best way to make sure your food or skin care product doesn’t contain GMOs is to look for the USDA Certified Organic Seal or a specific “non-GMO” designation; those products cannot contain GMOs. To be careful, just to be on the safe side, some companies are cutting out GMOs, joining GMO- free companies such as EE.

When you have some free time, do a little research on your own. That way you can discover all the answers to your questions.

As you begin or continue your quest to a healthier living, you will or have already come across the products with the labels “all-natural” and “organic.” These labels, although they are both products that are meant for healthy living, are very different. It is important to know the differences between them. This is for many reasons: 

  • Lifestyle
  • Beliefs
  • Necessity  or need

Also, for those of you that are new to the world of natural and organic skin care, the information can help you decide whether you’re team all-natural or team organic—there will be some of you who cheer for both teams.

Skin care products that are “all-natural” use ingredients that comes from natural resources. Basically, any resource that comes from nature, itself. They are minimally processed and do not contain any synthetic chemicals, yet some natural ingredients can be synthesized.

An example of this would be putting additional vitamins into a product that does naturally contain those vitamins.  Let’s say for example vitamin E is synthetically created, and placed within a product. This product will have the benefits of vitamin E, but not the actual thing.

However, ingredients that are “organic” do not use natural synthetic replacements for natural products. They use the real natural deal derived from living organisms, water, and sea salt are not considered organic material because although it comes from natured it was not derived from a living organism. They also cannot be genetically modified (GMO’s) do not contain any chemical preservatives. This would include artificial flavors, etc.

There are carrying levels of organic products made with organic ingredients.  A USDA certified product must contain at least 95% organic content; the company must also have its facilities, ingredients manufacturing procedures and packaging certified to make sure the process matches with the USDA requirements. A product can still be considered organic or contain organic materials, but basically without that USDA certification seal you are taking the company’s word for it. So, pay close attention to the labels and ingredients because it makes a difference.

A less restrictive level of “Organic Products” are those containing at least 70% organic content.  These products can be described as being “made with organic ingredients” may and can contain synthetic chemicals, preservatives, or GMO. So, be careful and read what you use. You’ll be surprised at what you find sometimes.

As for lifestyle, beliefs, and necessity or need, these reasons contribute to helping you decide which team you’re on. If you don’t believe in the creation or use of genetically modified organism (like plants and/or food), then you may want to go the route of organic. If your skin does not “agree” with chemicals or synthetic ingredients and you don’t want to risk it with “all-natural,” you may want to go organic as well.

Lifestyle plays a big role in what you chose because this not only incorporates your needs/necessities but incorporates your accessibility or the amount of funds you are willing to extend towards all-natural and or organic skin care.

In some cases, you may find that organic skin care may be more expensive than all-natural skin care at the moment. Or that all-natural or organic skin care may still be too much. This is okay and understandable. 

As we mentioned last week, companies are starting to realize that all-natural and organic skin care is what it needed. The rise of all-natural and organic skin care products has made accessibility to both worlds much easier. Now-a-days it’s becoming easier to not have to choose between the two. You can have both all-natural and organic, while looking out for the benefits you need for your skin.

Organic Ingredients:

  • Defined as coming from living biological matter like plants.
  • Government regulated and certified
  • Contains no artificial or chemical anything
  • No GMO
  • No synthetic natural replacements like synthetic vitamins
  • Can be USDA certified

All- Natural Ingredients:

  • Not regulated in skin care
  • Cannot be USDA certified
  • Can be altered and contain preservatives
  • Can also contain perfumes and some chemical ingredients
  • May be more affordable and offer more product options

There are other healthy living skin care categories out there, did you know? Although, they are sometimes incorporated into organic and all-natural skin care they are not always recognized as their own categories. Mostly because the products can’t always satisfy all the requirements of each group. Other skin care categories are Vegan and Cruelty-free.

Some products may be all-natural and/or organic but still test their products on animals which violates the cruelty-free rules. Cruelty-free means not testing their products on animals, or causing harm to animals in the development of the product.

Then, in the cases of vegan, some all-natural and organic skin care products use ingredients that come from animals and other living creatures. This means that the product may be totally organic, drawing from natural resources that come from living creatures. This violates the rules of being a vegan product. Vegan products contain no ingredients that come from living creatures.

Organic and all-natural skin care became a better solution for cleanliness and other needs, offering products that not only aid your skin with some irritants, but also keep and maintain its healthiness. For instance, oatmeal can help relieve the irritation of eczema.

Grapes and wine. Both interchangeably romantic as they symbolize a transformation from one good thing to another.  In Greek culture, grapes symbolized fertility, which could mean abundance in many things. Then after feasting on grapes you and your loved one can move on to the wine. Although, this is about red things of amore (love), white wine is better for your teeth, but red wine also has great health benefits as well as a rich flavor. It is recommended to drink it through a straw. A perfect excuse to share a special moment with your loved one.

Last but certainly not least, the popular aphrodisiac the strawberry. It’s an aphrodisiac in Rome, France, and Greece. It goes great with champagne and even better with sugar, chocolate or sweet cream. This delicious treat would be great to share as an after dinner snack… a romantic end to a lovely evening.
