Shea Butter Body Balms

Body Balms (USDA Organic)

Hey Earth’s Enrichers

Shea Butter Body Balms (USDA Organic)Shea Butter Body Balms

We hope that you are enjoying this beautiful weather! As more fall like days quickly approach and the temperature starts to drop, we have to ask, what do you put on your skin to keep it nourished and moisturized? Are you a lotion person or a shea butter body balm person?

What are Shea Butter Body Balms?

You do know the difference between lotions and body balms, right? Lotion, of course, moisturizes but it is not as thick or as creamy as a body balm. Lotions are made of oils and water. Body balms are much more dense and contain less water and more oil.

Why People use Shea Butter Body Balms?

One of body balm’s primary purposes is to moisturize skin effectively in a way that lotion cannot moisturize. The lotions you use may contain too much water and may not be giving your skin the level of moisturizing it needs.

Since body balms contain less water, they have enough of the proper oils to nourish the skin. When an individual applies lotion and it takes a good glob or handful of lotion to effectively nourish your skin, then a body balm may be what you need. It takes less than a big glob and can be used on the legs, face, arms, and feet.

Now, lotion is not all bad, but it is more convenient for you and healthier for your skin if you know how much moisturizer to apply. Lotion may not be enough to help you reach smooth, nourished, and moisturized skin. Also, it’s troublesome when you have too much of the lotion in your hands. Have you ever put too much lotion in your hands and looked for someone or something to wipe it on? Confess up!

Not to mention that wasting the lotion is kind of like losing money. Body balms usually come in a jar like ours. That way if you take too much you can just put it back in the jar and close the lid. Also, it is important to be careful when using dense oils to moisturize your skin, especially if you have naturally oily skin. Too much oil can cause break outs. So, use dense moisturizers responsibly.

What are the benefits of Body Balms?

If used appropriately, body balms can have many great effects on the skin. It’s a means of moisturizing your skin without suffocating it. They also give your skin a natural glow and make it more vibrant.

Body balms also come in many different fragrances. Each scent can come with its on benefits based on the ingredients that are used. For instance, here at EE we have three different scents: Lemon Fresh Shea, Calming Spa Seaweed, and Lavender of the Valley.  We also have an unscented body balm called Naturally Nude.

Before we go into the individual benefits, there are three main shared ingredients that we use in our balms. These ingredients produce the basic benefits of each balm. The three ingredients are sunflower oil, shea butter, and coconut oil. Sunflower oil helps the skin regenerate, reducing scars, improving aged skin, and has vitamins A, D, and E, while Coconut oil prevents the skin from flaking, helps with rashes, and protects against sun damage. Shea butter is a natural moisturizer that soothes the skin and helps protect it from elemental radicals like the wind and sun.

In EE’s Lemon Fresh Shea Body balm, we have other ingredients like lemongrass which wards off infections and fungus. In Calming Spa Seaweed, there are ingredients like seaweed and rosemary mint. Seaweed helps protect and nourish the skin while increasing blood circulation and combating inflammation. Rosemary mint soothes the skin and relieves any itch or irritation. It also is great for nasal and respiratory problems. In Lavender of the Valley, there is lavender which helps you relax and has gentle healing benefits.  The ingredients in Naturally Nude are great for sensitive skin and for individuals who are sensitive to varies scents and fragrances.  We invite you to try them and see which one is to your liking.

The EE 411:

As you all know, we encourage you to try things that are good for your health, not just for your skin but your overall wellness. In order to effectively maintain good health, it is important to know what is best for your body.

Body balms are great for the skin, but they must be used wisely and appropriately. Pay attention to where your body prefers deeper moisturizers. If skin on parts of your body produce more oils than others, keep it duly noted. You do not want to over burden your skin with oils.

Also, if you find that some places are more likely to become dry, then it may be the primary spot you want to apply the body balm. If used excessively without proper hygiene, the oils in the body balm could clog the pores. That is why it is important to know how much is too much for your skin and maintain your body’s cleanliness. That way you and your body know and have a proper balance.

Suntans & Sunburns

Sunburns and Suntans
Sun tanning in sun hat and sunglasses.

Hey Earth’s Enrichers

Suntans v. Sunburns.  As we all know very well, the sun is a power tool and a reason for vacation. The sun, family, fun, ocean—all blissful motivations for going to the beach—but our point is that with the sun and the beach comes sand, tans and sunburns!

So how do you know you’re prepared for a tan and how do you know when your tan becomes sunburn. The first thing to take into consideration is the fairness of your skin—lighter skin burns more easily. So in addition to the general tips we give you, take extra precautions if you’re a member of the lighter complexion.

With that being said, what is a suntan? A suntan is a browning of skin caused by exposure to the sun. This is similar to the cooking of a rotisserie chicken, so if you leave the chicken in there too long, it burns. The really cool nerdy part of a suntan is basically the stimulation of melanocytes from UV radiation, which encourages your skin to produce more melanin and darkens pigment.

Isn’t it neat how your skin reacts to the environment? We think it’s pretty extraordinary—a tan done right can produce beautifully golden skin and wonderful result. The best thing to do at that point is to keep it moisturized and clean.

Now, without proper protection and staying in the rotisserie oven too long, a sunburn could be produced. A sunburn occurs when there is a delayed reaction from UV B-erythema, which is caused by an increase in blood flow. The burn usually shows itself in at least 4 hours and peaks between 8 to 24 hours. In other words, in some cases the skin doesn’t take well to the UV and doesn’t absorb it properly. It requires extra protection to not burn in a lot of sun.  On the other hand, if your skin isn’t regularly exposed to the sun, it weakens the skin’s ability to handle the sun. Therefore, completely hiding your skin from the sun isn’t good for health either.  Your body needs vitamin D that the sun provides. So try to find a health balance.

Symptoms of Sunburns:

  1. Redness of skin.
  2. Skin may radiate heat and feel hot to touch.
  3. Pain or tenderness.
  4. Blistering and peeling skin.
  5. Sunburned eyes may feel painful or gritty.
  6. Headache, fever and fatigue if sunburn covers a large area.
  7. In severe cases, faintness, nausea, and vomiting.

The EE 411: Prevention and Best Suntan Practices

Prevention-

  • Sunscreen/sun block
  • Sun hats and caps
  • Umbrellas and beach umbrellas
  • Aloe Vera (helps soothe pain and redness)
  • Find shade
  • Try to avoid prolonged exposure to direct the sun between 10am and 4pm when it’s at its strongest.
  • Sunglasses
  • Loosely fitting clothing

Best Suntan Practices:

  • Always apply suntan or sunblock according to the directions provided. If it says last for 80 minutes and you’re going to be in the sun for 160 minutes, please reapply after the first 80 mins. It is advisable to look after your skin’s safety.
  • Putting up an umbrella on a beach is practically as fashionable as wearing a hat and it’s healthy too. Even use it while walking like if you forgot your sunscreen, you may look silly but your skin will be protected.
  • Wearing sunglasses helps protects your eyes from the sun because they can be damaged by the sun too.
  • Avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day which is between 10 am and 4 pm. Go out early mornings and evenings, if you can’t take extra precaution for your type of skin.
  • If burned, do not exfoliate or pick at your skin—it will come off on its own. Gently cleanse and moisturize. If especially painful, try aloe vera to help cool your sunburns.

Skin Rejuvenation

Skin Rejuvenation

Hey Earth’s Enrichers

Rejuvenation, revitalization, and renewal the three best “R’s” that any person likes to hear when picking a skin care product. Think about it.  How about a product with properties that can help bring the life and color back to your skin? Not magic, just organic ingredients that come with certain benefits, of course.

For instance, we use ingredients like aloe vera, coffee, and shea butter, etc. that contain properties that aid in skin repair and help restore your skin’s natural tone. With the addition of these ingredients, we have made skin care products that not only protect your skin, but protect your good looks as well!

Take a moment and imagine yourself on the beach: you begin your day with a nice shower/bath with Fresh Ground Java, which is filled with vanilla and grind coffee beans imbued with the ability to help improve skin tone and perk up your skin. The next step is the swim suit, then sunscreen, and now you’re ready for a tan in the sand! How wonderful is it to know that before you tan naturally you were rejuvenating and restoring your skin organically. Now, that’s a sweet deal if you ask us!

The EE 411: Better Skin Practices for Skin Rejuvenation

Blemishes and random discoloration on the skin tend to be hidden by makeup, which, if not done properly, can clog pores in the skin. Instead of just covering up the blemishes and moving on, why not try natural and organic remedies to help renew your skin tone?

Nothing works overnight and sometimes remedies don’t work the same for everyone– all we ask is that you give it a try or even consult a professional to inquire about some natural remedies which contain properties that support skin rejuvenation and revitalization.

Here are a few of those natural/organic ingredients we use to aid in skin care:

  • Coffee: reduces cellulite, protects against aging and skin damage, and also acts as an exfoliant.
  • Vanilla: guards against damage of skin cells and improves skin tone.
  • Cocoa Butter: fades blemishes and hydrates skin.
  • Aloe Vera: heals dry skin, stimulates cell growth, aids and repairs damaged tissue, and treats various skin conditions such as burns and eczema.
  • Cinnamon: exfoliates and assists with the drying of acne

There are many other natural and organic ingredients that we use to help look after your skin and your good looks. Under each product we list our ingredients and their benefits for you. Our transparency is for your benefit, you deserve to know all the ingredients that you use on your skin!

“Ignorance is Not Bliss” – Chemicals in Cosmetics

Hey Earth’s Enrichers

The organic and all-natural skin care community seems to have finally been heard! Just a few weeks ago CBS aired a segment about how important it is to know what you are using on your bodies in terms of skin care beauty products like hair products, make-up, soaps, and nail polish. Beware of the chemicals in cosmetics.  As mentioned by Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi in their CBS production, “Ignorance is not bliss.” What have we said every day since we began, Earth’s Enrichers? Skin care is not just important to your outer appearance but also your inner body– know your body and yourself by paying attention to the products you use.

As I mentioned before, we are being heard. Lawmakers are coming together to pass a law that allows the FDA to test whether the amounts of dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde are being used at safe levels. If levels are determined to be too high or dangerous, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) would have the power to recall the items in question. However, it is our concern that with constant or everyday use of products with even small dosages of harmful chemicals, that it’s still not a healthy choice for your body.

We digress, if Congress is starting to pay attention to the bigger issue, then kudos to us and them for making a stand to change! Stand fast in your home remedies and organic solutions because you, Earth’s Enrichers, are making a difference and taking care of your health from the inside out!

The EE 411: Numbers and Chemicals in Cosmetics

According to “Dangerous chemicals in cosmetics spur action by lawmakers,” Europe bans over 1,000 chemicals from their personal care product formulations. We checked the facts on this one: Page 18 of “the Council Directive” begins the list of chemicals banned from Europe. The U.S., on the other hand, according to CBS only bans 11 of these same chemicals, and this is supported by the FDA’s website.

So again, we urge you to look out for possibly harmful chemicals in your products while paying close attention to hair care, straighteners that may use formaldehyde or hair dye that may use propylparaben (lead acetate); and newer nail polish that lasts more than a week, which may also contain formaldehyde.

Earth’s Enrichers, we are not trying to scare you but we are trying to inform you. Harmful chemicals in skin care products is nothing new, and it has been around since the dawn of skin care products. Awareness is key to making a positive change and it also allows you to explore your options. We make USDA certified organic and all-natural skin care and hair care options because we care about you and you deserve the best. And for you, all-natural, non-GMO, organic, and chemical and paraben- free IS the best!

Organic Skin Care – Spring Cleaning

Hey Earth’s Enrichers

Organic-Skin-Care-Spring-Cleaning
Organic Skin Care Spring Cleaning

Spring is finally settling in place and summer is about to follow. Besides all of the diets and physical activity, what are you doing to prepare your skin for the summer? Yea, that’s what we thought—not many people know that preparing your skin for summer is an actual thing. There are certain steps that you might want to take in order to protect your skin from the upcoming heat and sun.

A total body cleansing, this means cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing.  Getting a head start on clearing acne or skin irritations before the heat and sweat irritate it is a great way to prepare for the summer. Not only are you clearing your skin for a great natural even tan but you are one step closer to smoother healthier skin.

After working on clearing your skin from acne, exfoliating your winter skin will also help smooth it out and make it glow. As you all know, exfoliation is when you scrub with a bathing tool that is a little rougher than a washcloth which can scrub off the dead skin lingering behind. Doing this can prevent random bits of embarrassing flaking that can happen throughout the day.

Moisturizing will restore the moisture that the exfoliating could take away to get rid of the dry skin. It helps bring out your skin’s natural glow and reduce dry flaking. Also during your moisturizing process, try to incorporate natural organic products that contain sun protection. This way your skin is getting all the nutrients it needs and protection from the sun’s UV rays.

There are other ways to get your skin ready for the summer but these are the basic and affordable first steps. The next step is getting those winter toes ready for sandals and flip-flops—a perfect excuse for a pedicure and manicure! If you have been saving all winter, treat yourself to a spa/makeover treatment. Remember; know your skin so that you do not over-do or under-do cleansing, exfoliation, or moisturizing.  This way you will be one step ahead of the sun.

The EE 411:

Other ways to prepare your skin for the summer:

  • Hydration- removing sodas from your diet and drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin clear and readies you for the heat.
  • If you live in large city/industrial/or dusty area, keep wipes or hand sanitizer with you to relieve your skin of dirt that can irritate or clog pores.
  • Given that the weather patterns have been little weird, make sure you pay attention to the temperature and dress appropriately.
  • We were serious about a run to the spa or a home mani and pedi! It helps for when you do want to wear those sandals.

Living Healthy – High Fiber Diets

Living Healthy - Hiber Fiber DietsHey Earth’s Enrichers

As you all can see, springtime is trying its very best to break in and leave winter behind.  When spring will surely be here is quite uncertain, but it is never too late to start getting ready. Some of you can feel springtime in your bones—although the weather does not scream spring just yet—you have started cleaning, airing out your houses, and getting into shape for those cute little dresses and shorts.

This is the diet season when everyone launches into the routine get-ready-for-spring-and-summer habits. One of those most popular diets known to help individuals lose weight are the high fiber diets. This week we’ll discuss the good and bad about high fiber diets. We will also give you some tips to help avoid or aid constipation that can result from ingesting too much fiber.

High fiber diets are a common and “easy” way to lose a few pounds. It requires that you add and consume more foods that are fibrous in your diet. Fiber makes passing food easier and has fewer calories that can linger in the body and turn into unnecessary fats. Nonetheless, this diet can go south quick.

High Fiber diets require precautions just like any other diet. You must regulate it and you must insure that you are ingesting the right amount of EVERYTHING you need. It is always risky to take on a diet that has a particular focus. In this case, fiber can make certain bodily functions easier but it can also make it harder for them to do their functions. Consuming too much fiber can cause constipation, which, like the tightening of braces, is something no person wants to voluntarily go through.

In addition, calories are important and are where your body gets its fuel for energy. Their purpose is to be ingested and burned off during your everyday activities. When too much of them are ingested and not worked off over a certain period of time they can become stored in the body as permanent fats. Hence, it is wise to watch your calorie intake, even with fiber-rich foods. That is right; the Calorie Counters are not all that crazy.

Last, as always, consult a professional when taking on a diet. Doing so can help you personalize your diet to work better for you. It also reduces unnecessary risk. Moreover, doing research about diets or other nutrition facts could spare you any surprises.

The EE 411: Avoidance and Alleviation of Constipation

Eating too much fiber can cause constipation. The best way to avoid it is to not overload your body with fiber. Fiber is a natural element that is present in most foods. It can be used to alleviate constipation but if you over do it, you could exacerbate the issue. An adult needs an average of 14 to 15 grams per day but, of course, it is better to seek a professional to give you the personalized dosage you may need.

The best way to alleviate and avoid constipation:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Incorporate some “roughage” in your diet like green fresh vegetables
  • Incorporate a good amount of fiber in your diet, but don’t make it your entire diet
  • Herbal teas
  • Exercise and stay physically active
  • Be patient if you’re constipated—rushing a constipated bowel movement can cause even more pain
  • Stretch and use some yoga positions—walk around and get everything moving

If all else fails, consult a professional and determine what kind of laxatives or stool softeners you may need.  Hopefully, this information will help you in your steps to discovering relief and taking on a high fiber diet.

Health and Living – The Many Phases of Migraines

Migraine and headache people - Doctor stressed. Woman Nurse / doHey Earth’s Enrichers

Migraines are a common problem for many individuals and can become major hindrances in everyday tasks. One of the first questions is: what is the difference between a normal headache and a migraine.

Headaches tend to be rather easy to get rid of and can be dealt with minor pain meds or reduction of stress.  Migraines, on the other, are a lot more difficult to get rid of as the pain becomes more severe. The best way to stop a migraine is to catch it before it becomes too severe, but how do you know when you have a migraine? Once you get it, how can you stop it?

Migraines can come with the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting , abdominal pain or upset stomach
  • Paleness
  • Sensitivity to light, noises
  • Sensitivity to odor or scents
  • Dizziness
  • Seeing spots or slight distortions
  • Fatigue
  • Fever

A lot of the symptoms vary depending on the individual; not all people with migraines will have light sensitivity or a fever. It’s best if you feel these symptoms coming about to get yourself in a safe place and relax to determine the severity of the oncoming migraine.

Dealing with a migraine can come in many fashions. Some individuals can rest and sleep off the pain. This option may not be plausible for individuals who are always on the go and can’t just stop to rest. There are over the counter pain relievers that are known to help relieve the pain. If they do not work or if you are unsure, it is best to see your doctor or a professional who can give you the best advice on how to deal with the pain.

If you have never experienced a migraine before and suddenly find yourself in a predicament where you can’t relieve the pain, try to pace your breathing. Whatever you do, do not cry because you will put unnecessary tension in the area of the pain and cause it to worsen. Find a friend, family member or coworker to drive you to a hospital or a care facility. It is best to get yourself to a place where professionals can help you ease the pain safely with your health in mind.

The EE 411: The Four Phases

There are four phases to a migraine that help you identify what it is and when it is coming.

The first phase is Prodrome. This can happen one to two days before a migraine and tends to cause small changes in behavior or habits. This can include cravings for certain foods, constipation, depression, hyperactivity, irritability, uncontrollable yawning, and neck stiffness.

The second phase is called Aura. This can happen either before or during a migraine. This can include visual phenomenon (seeing spots, bright spots, or varying shapes), vision loss, pins and needle sensations in the arms and legs, or loss of speech/language function (aphasia).

The third phase is called Attack and this is when the migraine sets in. This can include pain on one or both sides of the head, painful throbbing or pulsating, sensitivity to light and sound or smells, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, and light headedness.

The fourth phase is called the Postdrome and it occurs after the migraine is over. It is associated with extreme exhaustion or feeling drained. Sometimes people feel mild euphoria.

We hope this information helps you and that it has informed you of the severity of migraines. They are not meant to be taken lightly and anyone who has them should be considered with the utmost care. Please continue to do more research on your own time and remember to do what is best for your body.

Living Health – Foods that Boost Your Energy

Living Healthy - Foods that Boost Your EnergyHey Earth’s Enrichers

Last week we talked about caffeine and how too much could possibly be detrimental to your health. Since we alerted you about caffeine risks, we thought we should give you some other options and means to boost your energy throughout the day. So, just for trivia, what is the most natural way to boost energy?

The answer: Eat! The body usually builds energy from sustenance. Carbohydrates help produce fuel for your body. Eating the right things throughout the day can help your body maintain energy. Perhaps, you may not have to turn to caffeine if you find out what foods provide you with the appropriate amount of energy.

Carbohydrates are meant to be burned off since one of their major purposes is to fuel your body. This is an important aspect to keep in mind when you are eating foods that contain them. It may be counterproductive to overeat the needed amount just as it is counterproductive to under eat. Make sure you don’t skip meals and snack regularly. Not eating properly is a perfect way to zap energy and cause you to turn to not-so-healthy immediate options.

Foods, drinks, or snacks with a lot of sugar will give you a rapid fire of energy, but only for a moment. This can also result in negative health effects and crashing. Trust us, there is nothing worse than a sugar crash when you need to keep moving.

Remember, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the day to sneak in nutrition. It is up to you to determine which of those are the best opportunities. When you are working at your desk starting to feel tired and your stomach growls– pull out an apple or trail mix. It will help keep you stimulated throughout the day.

The EE 411: Foods that Boost Your Energy

To keep you on your toes at work and give you a bit of variety, here are some selections that can help keep you energized throughout the day:

  • Eggs- consist of proteins that help repair your body’s energy after sleeping and boosts you for the day.
  • Brown Rice- has proteins and carbs that help produce energy
  • Fruits- natural sugars, glucose, that your body is better at metabolizing

o   Apples- fiber! A nice sweet way to keep your energy alive without crashing.

o   Oranges- with vitamin C, folate, potassium, fiber, this fruit will give you ongoing doses of energy with each orangy little piece.

o   Bananas- fiber, glucose, fructose, etc. that will help boost energy.

o   Blueberries- consist of energy improving carbs, plus they taste good.

  • Greek Yogurt- why not?!
  • Nuts
  • Beans- a great source of proteins and carbs.
  • Oats- fiber, reduce the risk of CVD.
  • Fish- fatty acids, B6 vitamins, riboflavin, etc. It can lower cholesterol and reduces CVD.
  • Sweet Potatoes- Vitamin A, C, and Carbs to help increase energy.
  • Spinach- A top choice for iron that aids in producing energy.

Health and Living – Caffeine: Behind the Scene

Coffee to goHey Earth’s Enrichers

Why is it that the thing you love the most can be the thing most detrimental to you? We know that there are a few of you that would love a cup of coffee. It may not even be for a pick-me-up, but because it’s just so delicious. You can get it in as many different flavors as you would like such as pumpkin spice, caramel, hazelnut, French vanilla, mocha, Irish cream, etc.  The same goes for teas like green, black, Earl Grey, jasmine, etc. The same also applies to some popular sodas. What do all these things have in common besides good taste? Caffeine!

Caffeine is the world’s universal pick-me-up! Whenever we feel we aren’t going to make it through the day, we either go for a soda or a cup of coffee. Not to mention a possible energy drink, but energy drinks hardly taste that great. The problem with caffeine is that it is the most heedlessly consumed drug for energy boosts. Some individuals tend to consume it recklessly without thinking about the possible consequences of consuming too much.

Caffeine can be great and all, but you must be careful how much you consume. It can have adverse health effects that can cause discomfort. Just like any drug, it can be addictive. If you are used to consuming large amounts of caffeine and then suddenly decide to quit cold-turkey, it can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and anxiety. In small and controlled doses, caffeine can be helpful. It can help give you the boost you need to complete the day, help reduce the discomfort of headaches and migraines, and it can improve memory functions.

The truth is that not everything you love has to be detrimental to your health. The trick is in playing your cards right. Balance the intake of your favorite things like coffee or soda. It can help benefit your health and increase your performance instead of taking away from it. Enjoy!

The EE 411:  Caffeine – Coffee’s Dark Side

What too much caffeine can do to you:

  • Make you anxious
  • Give you headaches
  • Create mood swings
  • Increase discomfort of menstrual cramps
  • Create an addiction
  • Cause insomnia
  • Produce Chest pains
  • Increase CVD problems and raise heart rate

Even though in excess it can have some adverse health effects, coffee can still benefit you.   Just remember to use it in moderation and look for natural options to keep you motivated throughout the day.
