After dealing with allergies, blowing your nose, and sneezing…all things you can do that can incorporate your hands, we should probably talk about the most popular way to deal with the germs in the room. One popular solution for fighting bacteria and germs is hand sanitizer. We don’t know about you, but we noticed a sudden boom in hand sanitizer use within the past few years and wanted to make sure you know the facts.

For instance, hand sanitizers are great for dealing with small or minor cases of bacteria and germs. They are not helpful for grimy and visible situations. With that being said, the main and most effective ingredient in hand sanitizers is ethanol, more commonly known as alcohol. This ingredient in hand sanitizer is only effective at destroying bacteria and germs if the alcohol percentage is 60 or above. Any alcohol content lower than that in hand sanitizer is basically not as effective as should be.

Using hand sanitizer in tight or mobile situations can’t be helped but should not replace the tradition of hand washing. Washing your hands with soap and water is more effective and healthier for your skin. With the constant use of alcohol your skin can become dried out and crack. This leaves your hands rough and vulnerable to infection. The drier your skin, the greater the risk that cracking can cause minor open wounds vulnerable to the bacteria and germs you come in contact with.

We know you are desperate to get ahead of allergies and spreading/catching germs but make sure you keep in mind the repercussions of excessiveness. Just because something is said to be good for skin doesn’t always mean it’s good for your skin and good in excessive amounts.

The EE 411: General Hand Sanitizer Tips

When using or selecting hand sanitizer, please keep the following in mind:
• Make sure to choose hand sanitizers with an alcohol content of 60% or above.
• Never over or excessively use hand sanitizers—wash your hands with soap and water instead.
• Look for sanitizers that may incorporate a skin nourishment feature such as a moisturizer.
• When using hand sanitizers or washing your hands, keep hand lotion nearby and apply when needed to prevent cracks in your hands. This would be a perfect opportunity to try some of our body balms. They are cost effective, and a little at a time is all you need to rehydrate your skin. They are perfect to keep near the sink or on your desk in case of emergencies.

Spring Allergies

Allergies! It’s the sneezing—ugh, excuse us, SEASON for sneezing, coughing, burning eyes, and irritation we’ve all come to loathe. Trust us when we say we understand your pain. You know what’s to blame for that? Pollen blowing through the air coming from trees, grass, and weeds! Once the pollen goes into the nose it can cause people to sneeze, cough, and, well, you know the rest.

This week we will focus on some brief reminders of ways to help relieve the effects of allergies. Do you remember the effects of aroma therapy? Pure mint is the end all be all for congestion. Using a neti pot or a bowl of hot, and we mean HOT, water pour a little mint extract or oil and inhale gently (keep your eyes closed). It can temporarily relieve the congestion. Ah, to breathe again.

It also wouldn’t hurt to soak in a little Calming Spa Seaweed (bath salts).  It contains rosemary mint which may also help with decongestion while you detox everything else. Speaking of salt, salt can help temporally relieve soreness in the limbs and throat. Take warm water, not HOT, mix it with salt, and gargle with it—we wouldn’t recommend swallowing. Don’t use tap water, you want to make sure the water or steam produced by water is clean to avoid any other risks.

Staying hydrated is important in any season or time of the year. Not to mention, those of you who get special eye drops or nasal sprays, etc. stay on top of your stock and keep in touch with your doctor. As always do what is best for you. Check expiration dates, use clean hot/warm water, and try to stay relaxed! Stress won’t help make your allergy symptoms any better.

Folks tend to forget the natural benefits of tea! Well, don’t. Tea has a refreshing warmth that helps quell the congestion and please the pallet. It’s also that cool crispness needed to revitalize you on a sunny, hot day. Nevertheless, we realize tea is an acquired taste but if you haven’t had the pleasure, now’s as good of a time as any.

Organic Health – Other Than Nuts

We here at EE know that what works for the many doesn’t always work for the few. Last week we talked about going nuts. That many different types of nuts carry different types of nutritional benefits and make the perfect on the go healthy snack. But what about those of you who despise the nuts? Who are allergic to them? What other options do you have?

Never fear, we have taken the time to give you some of the options you seek. Instead of indulging nuts, the better options for those of you with nut issues can be seeds, olives, coconut, and lentils.

Before we continue with these various options, we must warn you that anything can come with an allergy. Try not to overdo what you like so that you don’t incidentally make yourself sick and even consuming a good thing has its limits. Also, make sure you are not allergic to any of these options. Trying a small portion of each you so desire before ingesting large amounts to make sure you do not have any allergies.

Now, when looking for a good substitution for the benefits of nuts, seeds are great. Seeds usually have a nutty consistency similar to what you find in peanuts. So, it makes an easy replacement that isn’t too bazaar. Seeds have been linked to lowering risk of heart diseases and can be a good anti-inflammatory. Seeds can also range from many types of benefits like protein, fiber, and antioxidants. So, if you are looking for a close substitute for nuts, seeds may be the option for you.

Now, if you are looking for something a little out of the box and definitely not similar to nuts in any way, you may like the olive option. Olives also have heart healthy benefits like controlling blood pressure, and helping to prevent blood clots. Olives are also a great source of vitamin E, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and potassium, etc. Pretty good option, if you’re not a fan of the nut and its texture.

This next option is very much mistaken for a nut or tree nut when it is not. Coconut is a fruit, not a nut. Even though people still have coconut allergies, those of you that are allergic to tree nuts might be able to eat coconuts. Coconuts have an immense amount of health benefits like boosting energy, defending against bacteria, reducing cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease, and boosting brain function.

Last but certainly not least, lentils are a good substitute for nuts. Lentils are more like beans, for example, dry beans, chickpeas, lupines, etc. They are high in protein and fiber. They are also a great source of potassium, vitamin K, calcium, and zinc. So if you are a bean person, then this may be the best choice for you.
